Behind the Scenes: Tower Bridge Glass Floor Replacement Time-Lapse
Ever wondered how Tower Bridge maintains its iconic Glass Floors? Get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the replacement of the sacrificial glass layer! Filmed on a beautiful sunny June evening (June 17th, 2024), this time-lapse captures the entire 6-hour process, from removing the old, scratched layer to installing and sealing the new one (completed the following day).
We spoke with Richard Smith, Exhibition Manager at Tower Bridge, and Ken Branscome of G&G Glass and Glazing to understand how and why the glass is replaced, and the importance of this maintenance. The video also features time-lapse footage showcasing the precision and expertise involved in this intricate glass replacement.
Why Replace the Glass?
The Glass Floors at Tower Bridge were installed back in 2014, and since then, they've seen a lot of foot traffic—over 7,258,000 visitors, in fact! And as one of London's only pet-friendly major attractions, more than 4,500 dogs, cats, and other animals have also tip-tapped across the glass.
This heavy use means the top layer of glass, the sacrificial layer, takes the brunt of the wear and tear. It's designed to be replaced periodically, protecting the stronger structural layers underneath. This ensures the continued safety and enjoyment of everyone who walks across them, while maintaining the clear views.
The Replacement Process (in Time-Lapse!)
The time-lapse footage condenses the 6-hour replacement process into a few captivating minutes. You'll see the team carefully removing the old, scratched sections of glass, meticulously cleaning the underlying layers, and then expertly installing and sealing the new sacrificial layer. It’s fascinating to see the precision and expertise involved in every step.
A Unique London Perspective
The Glass Floors offer a truly unique perspective of London life. From high above the Thames, you can see iconic red buses, busy pedestrians, cyclists zipping by, and river vessels sailing underneath. It’s a view you won’t get anywhere else.
